Certain stories. Do something. Reading William Maxwell's "Over the River" on the yellow couch at the 70's house. New York City in the 1940's. Snow on iron gates in the park. Dogs on and off leashes. Smashed Drugstore Windows. Sentences that illustrate the constant isolation of the self from the world at large. Sentences that prove other people to be a constant source of interest and concern. An old apartment with large rooms and high ceilings. Breakfast and the Help is a Problem. Two daughters and the nights spent trying to guide them back to sleep. Cocktail parties and a wind that blows a key of an invitation away. Certain things: lost forever. Other things: constant & near.

Reminded me the NYC story in Susan Sontag's I, Etcetera and of Susan Minot's Monkeys. (Both of which came after WM, of course.)
